How to Use PDF to Text Online

  1. Drop a PDF file onto the upload area or click to browse
  2. Text is extracted automatically — no button to click, it starts right away
  3. Review the extracted text, with page markers for multi-page PDFs
  4. Click "Copy" to copy the text, or "Download .txt" to save it as a file
  5. If no text appears, the PDF is likely scanned/image-based — try Image to Text (OCR) instead

PDF to Text Formula & Calculation

Each PDF page → text layer parsed via pdf.js → text items reassembled in reading order → concatenated across pages

Using Mozilla's pdf.js library, the tool reads each page's embedded text layer (the actual text objects and their positions stored in the PDF, not an image) directly in the browser, reassembles the individual text fragments into readable lines/paragraphs, and concatenates all pages into one plain-text output — with no file ever leaving your device.

This only works for PDFs that have a genuine text layer. A PDF created by scanning a paper document (i.e., the "text" is really a picture) has no embedded text for pdf.js to extract, so the output would be empty or garbled; such files need OCR (optical character recognition) rather than text extraction.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Text-layer vs scanned PDFs — Extraction only works on PDFs with a real text layer (most PDFs exported from Word, Google Docs, or typed documents). Scanned/photographed documents produce no usable text since this tool does not perform OCR.
  2. Layout fidelity — Complex layouts (multi-column pages, tables) can come out with words in a different reading order than the visual layout, since pdf.js extracts text by position, not semantic structure.
  3. Font encoding issues — PDFs using non-standard or embedded custom font encodings can occasionally produce incorrect or missing characters in the extracted text.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — text is extracted locally in your browser using Mozilla's pdf.js library. Your PDF never leaves your device.

This happens when a PDF is a scanned image or a photo saved as PDF rather than real text — there's no text layer to extract. Use our Image to Text (OCR) tool instead, or convert the pages to images first and run OCR on those.

No — it extracts plain text only, without fonts, columns, tables, or layout. For multi-page PDFs, each page is separated with a "--- Page N ---" marker so you can tell where page breaks occurred.

This tool processes one PDF at a time, since text extraction is usually something you want to read or copy immediately rather than batch-export. For converting many PDFs at once, see PDF to Image or PDF Merger.

No — encrypted or password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Remove the password first using a PDF tool, then extract the text.
