How to Use BMI Calculator Online

  1. Select your preferred unit: metric (kg, cm) or imperial (lbs, feet/inches)
  2. Enter your weight in kilograms (or pounds)
  3. Enter your height in centimetres (or feet and inches)
  4. Your BMI is calculated instantly with your category: Underweight, Normal, Overweight, or Obese
  5. For South Asian users, note that Indian guidelines set the overweight threshold at BMI 23+

BMI Calculator Formula & Calculation

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ [Height (m)]² | Imperial: BMI = [Weight (lbs) × 703] ÷ [Height (inches)]²

WHO Categories: Underweight < 18.5 | Normal 18.5–24.9 | Overweight 25–29.9 | Obese ≥ 30.
Indian/Asian cutoffs (ICMR): Overweight ≥ 23 | Obese ≥ 25 — adjusted for higher visceral fat at the same BMI vs Western populations.

Example: Weight = 70 kg, Height = 170 cm (1.70 m). BMI = 70 ÷ 2.89 = 24.2.
WHO: Normal. ICMR (Indian guideline): Overweight — metabolic risk screening recommended.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Muscle mass — BMI cannot distinguish fat from muscle. A 75 kg bodybuilder with 12% body fat and a 75 kg sedentary person with 32% body fat get the same BMI. Use body fat % or waist circumference alongside BMI.
  2. South Asian risk adjustment — Indians develop Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease at a BMI of 23–25, whereas the equivalent risk appears at BMI 27–30 in Caucasians. Use ICMR cutoffs for Indian adults.
  3. Waist circumference — More predictive of cardiovascular risk than BMI. High risk: men > 90 cm, women > 80 cm (Indian standards per Consensus Statement, 2008). Measure at the navel, not hips.
  4. Age consideration — BMI thresholds are for adults (18–65). Children use age-gender-specific percentile charts. For adults 65+, a BMI of 22–27 is associated with better outcomes than the standard normal range.

Frequently Asked Questions

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It is calculated as weight (kg) / height (m)². It is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure.

For adults: Below 18.5 = Underweight, 18.5–24.9 = Normal weight, 25–29.9 = Overweight, 30 and above = Obese. For Asians, a BMI of 23+ is considered overweight.

BMI does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or body fat distribution. Athletes may have high BMI but low body fat. It is best used alongside other health metrics.

A combination of a calorie-controlled diet and regular physical activity (150+ minutes of moderate exercise per week) is the most effective way to reduce BMI sustainably.
