GST Calculator Formula & Calculation

Add GST: GST Amount = Price × Rate ÷ 100 | Remove GST: Original = Final ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)

For intra-state supply: CGST = SGST = GST Amount ÷ 2. For inter-state supply: IGST = full GST Amount.

Example (Add GST): Product priced at ₹10,000 with 18% GST → GST = ₹1,800 → Final price = ₹11,800 → CGST = ₹900, SGST = ₹900.
Example (Remove GST): Invoice shows ₹11,800 inclusive → Original = 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000 → GST component = ₹1,800.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. GST slab — Since the GST 2.0 rate rationalisation (effective 22 Sep 2025), India has three main rates: 5% (essentials, most food, daily necessities), 18% (the standard rate — most goods and services), 40% (sin/luxury goods like tobacco, pan masala, luxury vehicles). The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were discontinued. Misapplying the slab means penalty.
  2. Supply type — Intra-state (within same state) attracts CGST + SGST equally split. Inter-state (across states) attracts IGST at the full rate. E-commerce sellers must follow destination state rules.
  3. Composition scheme — Businesses under ₹1.5 crore annual turnover can opt for a flat 1–5% rate with no ITC. Suitable for local retailers; not ideal for B2B businesses that need to pass on credit.
  4. Input Tax Credit (ITC) — Registered GST businesses can claim ITC on GST paid for purchases, reducing their net tax liability. Reconcile monthly on GSTR-2B to avoid mismatches.

Frequently Asked Questions

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple older taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty.

Since the GST 2.0 rate rationalisation (effective 22 September 2025), India has three main GST slabs: 5%, 18%, and 40%, plus 0% for essentials. The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were discontinued — most goods that were at 12% moved to 5%, and most goods that were at 28% moved to 18% or the new 40% slab for sin/luxury goods.

CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are levied on intra-state transactions and are split equally. IGST (Integrated GST) is levied on inter-state transactions.

To add GST: GST Amount = Price × GST% / 100. Total = Price + GST Amount. To remove GST from an inclusive price: Original Price = Inclusive Price × 100 / (100 + GST%).

Businesses with annual turnover above ₹40 lakhs (₹20 lakhs for services) must register for GST. Inter-state suppliers must register regardless of turnover.
