EPF Calculator Formula & Calculation

Employee EPF = 12% of Basic | Employer EPF = 3.67% of Basic | EPS = 8.33% (capped ₹1,250/month)

Total monthly EPF deposit = 15.67% of basic salary. Interest rate = 8.25% p.a. (FY 2025-26), compounded monthly.

Example: Basic = ₹30,000/month. Employee EPF = ₹3,600 | Employer EPF = ₹1,101 | EPS = ₹1,250 (capped). Total EPF credit per month = ₹4,701. After 30 years at 8.25%: Corpus ≈ ₹76 lakh.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Basic salary percentage — EPF is calculated on Basic + DA, not gross CTC. A higher basic means more PF but also more HRA exemption potential. Negotiate your salary structure wisely.
  2. Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) — You can contribute up to 100% of basic + DA voluntarily to EPF at the same 8.25% guaranteed rate. Best tax-free debt instrument available to salaried employees.
  3. EPFO interest rate — Set annually by EPFO. Currently 8.25% (FY 2025-26) — higher than most bank FDs and PPF, with similar EEE tax status. Rate history: 8.1% (FY22), 8.15% (FY23), 8.25% (FY24 and FY25).
  4. Withdrawal rules — Full withdrawal allowed only on retirement (58 years) or 2 months of unemployment. Partial withdrawal allowed for marriage (after 7 years), house (after 5 years), medical (any time). Premature full withdrawal before 5 years of service is taxable.

Frequently Asked Questions

EPF (Employees' Provident Fund) is a retirement savings scheme for salaried employees in India. Both you (employee) and your employer contribute 12% of your Basic + DA salary every month to your EPF account.

The EPF interest rate is set by the EPFO each year. It was 8.25% per annum for FY 2025-26 (unchanged from the prior year); the rate for FY 2026-27 had not yet been announced as of this writing. The calculator uses this rate by default, but you can change it to model different scenarios or once EPFO announces a new rate.

No — of the employer's 12%, only 3.67% goes to your EPF account. The remaining 8.33% goes to EPS (Employees' Pension Scheme), capped at a salary of ₹15,000.

EPF contributions up to ₹1.5 lakh/year are tax-deductible under Section 80C. Interest earned is tax-free up to the contribution threshold. Contributions above ₹2.5 lakh/year (employee share only) are taxable from FY 2021-22.

Full withdrawal is allowed at retirement (age 58) or after 2 months of unemployment. Partial withdrawals are allowed for specific purposes like home loan, marriage, medical emergency, and higher education.
