How SIP Works — The Power of Compounding

SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) lets you invest a fixed amount monthly in mutual funds. The formula:

M = P × [{(1 + r)^n – 1} / r] × (1 + r)
Where P = monthly amount, r = monthly rate, n = months

Illustrative example (not a projection or guarantee — actual returns depend on market performance): at a hypothetical 12% annual return, ₹5,000/month for 20 years would grow to ₹49.96 Lakhs on ₹12 Lakhs invested.

How to Use SIP Calculator Online

  1. Enter your monthly SIP investment amount in rupees
  2. Set the expected annual return rate (historically 12–15% for equity mutual funds in India)
  3. Enter the investment duration in years (longer is better due to compounding)
  4. See the projected final corpus, total amount invested, and total wealth gained
  5. Use the Step-Up SIP toggle to factor in annual increment in investment amount

SIP Calculator Formula & Calculation

M = P × [{(1 + r)ⁿ − 1} ÷ r] × (1 + r)

M = Maturity amount | P = Monthly SIP amount | r = Monthly return rate (Annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) | n = Total months

Example: ₹10,000/month SIP, 12% p.a. for 15 years (n = 180, r = 0.01) → M = ₹50,45,760. Total invested = ₹18,00,000. Wealth gain = ₹32,45,760 (180% profit purely from compounding).

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Investment duration — The most powerful lever. ₹5,000/month at 12% for 20 years = ₹49.9L; for 30 years = ₹1.76 crore. Starting 5 years earlier nearly doubles the final corpus.
  2. Expected return rate — Equity mutual funds in India have historically delivered 12–15% over 10+ years. Debt funds yield 6–8%. Even 2% difference over 20 years on ₹10,000/month = ₹30+ lakh difference.
  3. Step-up SIP — Increasing SIP by 10% every year on a ₹10,000/month base over 20 years at 12% grows corpus from ₹91L to ₹1.92 crore — more than double with just 10% annual step-up.
  4. Market timing misconception — SIP's rupee cost averaging makes timing irrelevant. Pausing SIP during market falls (the worst mistake) loses the benefit of buying more units at lower NAV.

Frequently Asked Questions

SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) lets you invest a fixed amount regularly (monthly) in mutual funds. It averages out the cost of investment and benefits from compounding over time.

SIP corpus = P × [{(1+r)^n – 1}/r] × (1+r), where P is the monthly investment, r is the monthly return rate, and n is the number of months.

Historically, equity mutual funds in India have given 12–15% annual returns over long periods. For conservative estimates, use 10–12% p.a.

Step-Up SIP (also called top-up SIP) means increasing your SIP amount by a fixed percentage each year. This aligns your investment growth with salary increments and significantly increases final corpus.

SIP in equity mutual funds carries market risk but over 10+ year horizons has historically generated inflation-beating returns. Debt fund SIPs are lower risk but also lower return.
