Income Tax Calculator Formula & Calculation

Tax = Apply slab rates to (Gross Income − Deductions) + 4% Health & Education Cess

New Regime slabs (FY 2026-27): ₹0–4L: 0% | ₹4–8L: 5% | ₹8–12L: 10% | ₹12–16L: 15% | ₹16–20L: 20% | ₹20–24L: 25% | Above ₹24L: 30%. Standard deduction ₹75,000. Rebate u/s 87A: No tax up to ₹12L income under new regime.

Old Regime slabs: ₹0–2.5L: 0% | ₹2.5–5L: 5% | ₹5–10L: 20% | Above ₹10L: 30%. Allows deductions: 80C (₹1.5L), HRA, NPS (₹50,000), Standard Deduction ₹50,000.

Example: ₹12L salary → New Regime: taxable after ₹75K std. deduction = ₹11.25L → Tax = ₹0 (87A rebate applies up to ₹12L) → Net tax = ₹0. Old Regime: after ₹2.5L deductions = ₹9.5L → Tax = ₹1,17,000 → Clear winner: New Regime.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. 80C deductions (Old Regime) — Invest up to ₹1.5L in PPF, ELSS, LIC, EPF, SCSS or principal repayment. At 30% slab this saves ₹46,800 in tax — but the new regime removes this entirely.
  2. HRA exemption — Salaried employees in rented homes can exempt a portion of HRA (metro: 50% of basic, non-metro: 40%). This alone can save ₹40,000–₹80,000+ in tax annually.
  3. Regime choice — New regime is better if your deductions are below ₹3.75L (break-even point at ₹15L+ income). Below ₹15L income, new regime is almost always better from FY 2026-27.
  4. Surcharge — Applies at 10% on tax if income exceeds ₹50L; 15% above ₹1 crore; 25% above ₹2 crore; 37% (old) / 25% (new) above ₹5 crore. Effective peak rate = 39% in new regime.

Frequently Asked Questions

The old regime allows deductions (80C, HRA, LTA etc.) with higher tax rates. The new regime offers lower slab rates but no deductions. The better option depends on your deductions.

Under the new regime: Up to ₹4L = Nil, ₹4L–₹8L = 5%, ₹8L–₹12L = 10%, ₹12L–₹16L = 15%, ₹16L–₹20L = 20%, ₹20L–₹24L = 25%, Above ₹24L = 30%.

Under the new regime, if your taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh, you get a full tax rebate under Section 87A — meaning zero tax payable.

Section 80C allows deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh for investments in PPF, ELSS, EPF, NSC, life insurance premiums, home loan principal, and tuition fees.

Salaried employees get a standard deduction of ₹75,000 under the new regime and ₹50,000 under the old regime for FY 2026-27.
