IP Address Checker Formula & Calculation

Public IP fetched via ipify API (separate IPv4 + IPv6 endpoints) | Geolocation + ISP details fetched via ipapi.co, keyed off that IP

Your browser can't see your own public IP address directly — it only knows your private/local network address. This tool works around that by making two outbound API calls from your browser: one to api4.ipify.org for your IPv4 address, and one to api6.ipify.org for your IPv6 address (if your connection supports it). It then passes the discovered IP to ipapi.co, a separate geolocation API, which returns the approximate city/region/country, ISP name, and latitude/longitude used to plot your location on the map.

Because this relies on IP-to-location databases maintained by your ISP's registered address block, the location shown is typically accurate to city or region level — not your exact street address — and can be notably off if your ISP routes traffic through a different city, or if you're using a VPN/proxy (in which case the IP and location shown will be the VPN exit server's, not your own).

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. VPN/proxy usage — If you're connected through a VPN, proxy, or corporate network, the IP and location shown belong to that service's exit server, not your physical location.
  2. IPv4 vs IPv6 — Many ISPs assign both; mobile/newer connections often get IPv6 while older or NAT'd connections only show IPv4. Seeing "Not available" for IPv6 usually just means your ISP hasn't enabled it on that connection.
  3. Geolocation accuracy — IP-based location is derived from ISP-registered address blocks, not GPS, so it's typically accurate to city/region level and can be off by tens or even hundreds of kilometers, especially on mobile data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your public IP is the address your internet provider assigns to your connection — it's how websites and servers identify where you're connecting from. Every device on the same home or office network shares the same public IP.

IPv4 (e.g. 103.45.12.8) is the traditional 32-bit address format with about 4 billion possible addresses. IPv6 (e.g. 2401:4900::1) is the newer 128-bit format with virtually unlimited addresses. Most devices have both — IPv4 for legacy compatibility and IPv6 for future-proof connectivity.

IP geolocation is approximate — it shows the city or region where your ISP's network is routed, not your exact physical location. VPN users will see the VPN server's location instead of their real location. Accuracy is typically within 50–200 km.

An ASN is a unique number assigned to a network (ISP or organization) that independently routes internet traffic. For example, Jio is AS55836 and Airtel is AS9498. You can use ASN to identify which company controls a block of IP addresses.

Yes — switch to the "Lookup Any IP" tab, enter any public IPv4 or IPv6 address, and see its country, city, ISP, timezone, and location on the map. Try well-known IPs like 8.8.8.8 (Google) or 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare).
