Percentage Calculator Formula & Calculation

% of number: (P × N) ÷ 100 | What % is X of Y: (X ÷ Y) × 100 | % change: ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100

Common use cases with Indian examples:
• GST: 18% of ₹5,000 = (18 × 5,000) ÷ 100 = ₹900
• Salary hike: ₹50,000 → ₹58,000 = ((58,000 − 50,000) ÷ 50,000) × 100 = 16% hike
• Exam marks: 445 out of 500 = (445 ÷ 500) × 100 = 89%
• Reverse discount: ₹1,749 after 30% off → original = 1,749 ÷ 0.70 = ₹2,499

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. GST calculations — Most common use in India. Remember: adding GST (forward) and removing GST (reverse/inclusive) use different formulas. Adding 18% to ₹100 = ₹118; removing 18% from ₹118 = 118 ÷ 1.18 = ₹100 (not 118 − 18% = ₹96.76).
  2. Percentage points vs percentage change — "Interest rate rose from 6% to 8%" = 2 percentage points increase, but 33.3% relative change. These are different; confusing them leads to misleading interpretations in news and finance.
  3. Exam and CGPA conversion — Most Indian universities: % = CGPA × 9.5 (Anna University, Mumbai University). Some use × 10. VTU uses a different formula. Confirm your university's specific formula before applying.
  4. EMI affordability rule — Your total EMI should not exceed 40–50% of net take-home salary (RBI guideline). On ₹50,000 take-home: max EMI ≈ ₹20,000–25,000 across all loans (home, car, personal combined).
