What is Average Calculator?

Free average calculator. Calculate mean, median, mode, range, variance, and standard deviation of any set of numbers. Fast, accurate mathematical calculators that show step-by-step working. TekPulse's Average Calculator is completely free — no signup, no ads in results, and no data stored on our servers.

How to Use Average Calculator Online

  1. Enter numbers separated by commas or on separate lines in the input area
  2. Click Calculate to get the Mean, Median, Mode, Range, and Standard Deviation instantly
  3. View the sorted dataset alongside each statistical value
  4. Use the weighted average tab to assign different weights to each number
  5. Copy results for use in reports or spreadsheets

Average Calculator Formula & Calculation

Mean = Σx ÷ n | Median = middle value (sorted) | Mode = most frequent value | Variance = Σ(x − Mean)² ÷ n | Std. Deviation = √Variance

The mean sums all values and divides by the count; the median sorts the values and takes the middle one (or the average of the two middle values for an even count); the mode is the most frequently occurring value(s); variance measures average squared deviation from the mean, and standard deviation is its square root, giving a sense of spread in the original units.

Example: Dataset {12, 15, 15, 18, 20} → Mean = 80÷5 = 16 → Median = 15 → Mode = 15 → Variance = [(12-16)²+(15-16)²+(15-16)²+(18-16)²+(20-16)²]÷5 = (16+1+1+4+16)÷5 = 7.6 → Std. Deviation ≈ 2.76.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Mean vs median for skewed data — The mean is sensitive to outliers (e.g., one very large value pulls it up); the median is more robust for skewed datasets like income or exam scores with a few extreme values.
  2. Population vs sample variance — This calculator computes population variance (divides by n); if your dataset is a sample meant to estimate a larger population's variance, the statistically unbiased formula divides by (n − 1) instead, giving a slightly larger value.
  3. No mode case — If every value appears exactly once (or all appear equally often), there is no meaningful mode, and the calculator reports "None" rather than an arbitrary value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mean is the sum divided by count (average). Median is the middle value when sorted. Mode is the most frequently occurring value. For skewed data, median is often more informative than mean.

A weighted average gives different weights (importance) to different values. Formula: Σ(value × weight) / Σ(weights). Used in GPA calculations, where different subjects have different credit hours.

Population mean (μ) is the average of an entire population. Sample mean (x̄) is the average of a subset (sample). In statistics, sample mean is used to estimate the population mean.

Add all subject marks and divide by the number of subjects for a simple average. For GPA: convert marks to grade points, multiply by credit hours, sum all, then divide by total credit hours.

RMS is the square root of the mean of the squares of values. It is used in physics and engineering (e.g., AC voltage RMS value). Formula: √(Σx²/n).
