What is Fraction Calculator?

Free fraction calculator. Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions with step-by-step solutions. Simplifies fractions automatically. Fast, accurate mathematical calculators that show step-by-step working. TekPulse's Fraction Calculator is completely free — no signup, no ads in results, and no data stored on our servers.

How to Use Fraction Calculator Online

  1. Enter the first fraction (numerator and denominator in separate fields)
  2. Select the operation: Add (+), Subtract (−), Multiply (×), or Divide (÷)
  3. Enter the second fraction
  4. View the result as a fraction in its simplest form and also as a decimal
  5. Each step of the calculation is shown — useful for learning and verifying homework

Fraction Calculator Formula & Calculation

Simplify a/b: divide both numerator and denominator by GCD(a, b), computed via the Euclidean algorithm

The Euclidean algorithm finds the greatest common divisor by repeatedly replacing the larger number with the remainder of dividing it by the smaller number, until the remainder is zero. Dividing both numerator and denominator by this GCD gives the fraction in its lowest terms. For arithmetic (add/subtract/multiply/divide), the result is computed first and then simplified the same way.

Example: Simplify 48/180 → GCD(48, 180): 180 = 3×48 + 36 → GCD(48,36) → 48 = 1×36 + 12 → GCD(36,12) → 36 = 3×12 + 0 → GCD = 12 → Simplified fraction = 48÷12 / 180÷12 = 4/15.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Sign handling — The sign is normalized to the numerator (a negative denominator is converted to a negative numerator with a positive denominator) so results display in standard mathematical form.
  2. Whole number results — If the simplified denominator is 1, the result is displayed as a plain whole number rather than a fraction (e.g., 10/2 simplifies to 5, not 5/1).
  3. Improper fractions — Results greater than 1 are shown as improper fractions (e.g., 7/4) rather than mixed numbers; convert manually to a mixed number (1¾) if needed for a specific use case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find the LCM (Least Common Multiple) of the denominators, convert both fractions to equivalent fractions with that denominator, then add the numerators. Example: 1/3 + 1/4 = 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12.

Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. Example: 2/3 × 3/4 = (2×3)/(3×4) = 6/12 = 1/2. Always simplify the result to its lowest terms.

Divide the numerator by the denominator. Example: 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. Some fractions produce repeating decimals: 1/3 = 0.333...

A mixed number has a whole part and a fraction part: e.g., 2½. To convert to an improper fraction: multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator: 2½ = (2×2+1)/2 = 5/2.

Reducing a fraction to its lowest terms by dividing both numerator and denominator by their GCD. Example: 12/18 — GCD is 6 — simplified to 2/3.
