Number to Words Formula & Calculation

Indian system: groups by Crore (10⁷), Lakh (10⁵), Thousand (10³) | International system: groups by Billion (10⁹), Million (10⁶), Thousand (10³)

The Indian numbering system groups digits as 2-2-3 from the right after the first three digits (thousand, lakh = 100 thousand, crore = 100 lakh), whereas the international system groups every 3 digits (thousand, million, billion). The converter extracts each place value by successive division and remainder, then spells out each chunk (hundreds place handled separately from tens/units).

Example: 12345678 → Indian: 1 Crore, 23 Lakh, 45 Thousand, 678 → "One Crore Twenty Three Lakh Forty Five Thousand Six Hundred Seventy Eight". International (same number, 12,345,678): "Twelve Million Three Hundred Forty Five Thousand Six Hundred Seventy Eight".

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Indian vs international grouping — The same number reads very differently depending on the system: 1,00,00,000 is "1 Crore" in Indian format but reads as "10,000,000" / "Ten Million" internationally — always match the format to your audience (legal/financial documents in India typically use the Indian system).
  2. Comma placement — The Indian digit-grouping convention (2-2-3, e.g., 12,34,567) differs from the international 3-3-3 convention (1,234,567) for the same value — this affects readability, not the underlying number.
  3. Negative numbers and zero — Negative inputs are prefixed with "Minus" and converted the same way; zero is handled as a special case returning simply "Zero" rather than running through the grouping logic.
