Word Counter Formula & Calculation

Reading Time (min) = Word Count ÷ 238 | Speaking Time (min) = Word Count ÷ 130

The tool estimates reading time using 238 words per minute — the commonly cited average adult silent-reading speed for everyday (non-technical) text — and speaking time using 130 words per minute, a typical conversational speech rate. Both figures are rounded up to the nearest whole minute (minimum 1 minute) since a partial minute still takes real time to read or say aloud.

Example: A 950-word blog post → Reading time = 950 ÷ 238 = 3.99 → rounds up to 4 min. Speaking time (e.g. for a video script) = 950 ÷ 130 = 7.3 → rounds up to 8 min.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Text complexity — 238 wpm assumes plain prose. Dense technical writing, code, or unfamiliar vocabulary is read noticeably slower in practice; treat the estimate as a ballpark, not a guarantee.
  2. Audience — Speaking time at 130 wpm suits a measured, clear narration pace (useful for scripting voiceovers or presentations). Fast talkers can exceed 160 wpm, which would shorten actual speaking time.
  3. Character vs word count — The tool also reports characters with and without spaces separately, useful for platforms with strict character limits (e.g. meta descriptions, SMS, social posts) where word count alone isn't the binding constraint.
