How to Use Tip Calculator Online

  1. Enter the total bill amount in rupees
  2. Select or type the tip percentage (15%, 18%, 20% are common; India averages 10–15%)
  3. Enter the number of people splitting the bill
  4. View the tip amount per person, bill per person, and total per person
  5. Round up/down the per-person total for easy cash payment

Tip Calculator Formula & Calculation

Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100 | Total = Bill + Tip | Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People

Rounding (when enabled) rounds the per-person share up to the nearest rupee or nearest ₹10 for easier cash settlement.

Example: Bill = ₹2,840 for 4 people, 10% tip → Tip = ₹284 → Total = ₹3,124 → Per person = ₹781 (rounded to nearest ₹10 → ₹790 to keep the total slightly over and avoid short payment).

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Tipping norms in India — Restaurants and cafés typically see 5–10% tips; it is not mandatory (unlike the US) and is separate from any "service charge" a restaurant may already add to the bill — check the bill before tipping on top of a service charge.
  2. Uneven splits — This calculator assumes an equal split; if people ordered very different amounts, a custom/itemized split (see the custom split option) gives a fairer per-person amount than a flat divide.
  3. Rounding method — Rounding up the per-person amount means the total collected slightly exceeds the actual bill + tip — intentional, to simplify cash payments among a group.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tipping is not mandatory in India. A common practice is 10% of the bill at restaurants. At higher-end restaurants, 10–15% is typical. Check if a service charge is already included.

Service charge is a mandatory fee added by the restaurant (usually 5–10%) and goes to the establishment. A tip is voluntary and ideally goes directly to the service staff.

Add the total bill plus tip, then divide by the number of people. Example: ₹2,000 bill + ₹200 tip = ₹2,200 ÷ 5 people = ₹440 per person.

Convention varies. In India, tipping on the pre-tax food amount is most common. In the US, tipping on the post-tax total is standard. Either is acceptable.

According to the Consumer Affairs Ministry guidelines (2022), a service charge is not mandatory and consumers can request its removal. You cannot be forced to pay it.
