About this speed test
Download — measures how fast data arrives from the internet to you (browsing, streaming, downloads)
Upload — measures how fast your device sends data (video calls, file sharing, cloud backup)
Ping — measures latency (response time). Lower is better for gaming and video calls
For accurate results: close other downloads, connect via Ethernet if possible
Uses Cloudflare's global network — no data is stored or logged

What is Internet Speed Test?

Test your internet connection speed for free. Measure download Mbps, upload Mbps, and ping latency instantly without any plugin or signup. Developer utilities built for web developers, software engineers, and programmers. TekPulse's Internet Speed Test is completely free — no signup, no ads in results, and no data stored on our servers.

How to Use Internet Speed Test Online

  1. Click "Start Test" — the test first measures download speed, then upload speed, then ping
  2. Keep the page active and avoid using other internet-heavy applications during the test
  3. View download speed (Mbps), upload speed (Mbps), and ping (ms) results
  4. Run the test 2–3 times at different times of day for a more accurate average
  5. Compare results with your ISP's promised plan speed to check if you are getting what you paid for

Internet Speed Test Formula & Calculation

Throughput (Mbps) = (bits transferred ÷ elapsed seconds) ÷ 1,000,000 — measured separately for ping, download, and upload

This tool measures real network performance against Cloudflare's public speed-test endpoints rather than simulating a result. Ping is measured by timing several lightweight requests to speed.cloudflare.com/__down?bytes=0 and taking the second-lowest round-trip time (to discard a possible first-request outlier from connection setup). Download speed streams progressively larger payloads (25MB, then 25MB, then 50MB) via fetch() and a ReadableStream reader, sampling bytes received every 300ms to show a live speedometer, then computing total bits received over total elapsed time across all three downloads. Upload speed sends 2MB chunks of random bytes to the server via XMLHttpRequest, using the upload.progress event (which fires on actual TCP acknowledgments from the server, not just local buffer writes) across 4 rounds — the first round is discarded as a warmup to let TCP slow-start ramp up, so it doesn't drag down the average.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Warmup round discarded — TCP connections start slow (\"slow start\") and ramp up their transfer rate over the first several round-trips. Counting the first upload round would understate your real sustained speed, so this tool measures 4 rounds and only averages the last 3.
  2. Multiple download sizes — Using small-then-large payloads (25MB, 25MB, 50MB) lets the test adapt: small transfers finish fast on slow connections without a long wait, while larger transfers on fast connections give TCP enough time to reach full throughput before the test ends.
  3. Server/network conditions affect results — Results reflect the path to Cloudflare's nearest edge server, not an absolute measure of your ISP plan — Wi-Fi interference, VPNs, other devices on the network, and server load can all lower the measured number versus your plan's advertised speed.
  4. Mbps vs MB/s — Internet speeds are conventionally reported in megabits per second (Mbps), but file transfer progress bars usually show megabytes per second (MB/s) — divide Mbps by 8 to get the MB/s a download will actually show.

Frequently Asked Questions

It uses Cloudflare's global CDN network to measure your real download and upload throughput. Results can vary by 5–15% from ISP-provided numbers because network conditions change second by second. For best accuracy, close other applications and run the test 2–3 times.

ISP plans advertise "up to" speeds — actual speeds depend on network congestion, Wi-Fi signal strength, your router, and how many devices share the connection. If you're on Wi-Fi, connecting via Ethernet cable can give significantly higher results.

Ping measures how long it takes a data packet to travel from your device to the server and back (round trip), in milliseconds (ms). Lower ping means faster response — important for gaming (under 30ms is ideal), video calls, and real-time apps.

Standard HD (1080p) streaming requires about 5–10 Mbps per stream. 4K streaming needs 15–25 Mbps. For video calls (Zoom, Meet), 3–5 Mbps upload and download is sufficient. For a household with multiple users, 50–100 Mbps is recommended.

The test sends random bytes to Cloudflare servers and downloads test data to measure your connection speed. No personal information is stored. The data transferred is purely for measurement purposes and is discarded immediately.
