Salary Calculator Formula & Calculation

CTC = Basic + HRA + PF(employer) + Allowances + Gratuity | Take-Home = Gross − PF(employee) − PT − TDS

Example CTC = ₹12,00,000/year: Basic (40%) = ₹4,80,000 | HRA (50% of basic) = ₹2,40,000 | Other allowances = ₹2,80,000 | Employer PF (12% of basic) = ₹57,600 | Gratuity provision = ₹23,077.
Gross salary = ₹9,42,400. Employee PF = ₹57,600 | Professional Tax = ₹2,400 | TDS = ₹0 (87A rebate, new regime).
Net monthly take-home ≈ ₹73,533.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Basic salary percentage — Higher basic means higher PF deduction (reduces take-home) but also higher HRA exemption potential and higher gratuity. Most Indian companies set basic at 40–50% of CTC.
  2. Tax-free allowances — LTA (2 journeys in 4 years), meal vouchers (₹2,200/month), phone/internet reimbursement, and uniform allowance are partially or fully tax-exempt — negotiate these into your package.
  3. Variable pay — Annual bonus, PLI, ESOP vesting are taxed at your slab in the year of receipt. A ₹2L bonus at 30% slab means ₹60,000 tax. Time ESOP vesting across financial years if possible.
  4. New vs Old regime at ₹12L CTC — New regime (zero tax up to ₹12L with 87A rebate) clearly wins unless your 80C + HRA + NPS deductions exceed ₹3.75L.

Frequently Asked Questions

CTC (Cost to Company) is the total annual cost the employer incurs for an employee. In-hand (take-home) salary is what you actually receive after all deductions like EPF, professional tax, and income tax.

Basic salary is the core component of your pay, typically 40–50% of CTC. It is fully taxable and forms the basis for other components like HRA, PF, and gratuity.

EPF (Employees' Provident Fund) is a retirement savings scheme. Both employee and employer contribute 12% of basic salary each. The employee's 12% is deducted from salary; the employer's 12% is a CTC component.

Professional Tax is a state-level tax levied on salaried individuals. It varies by state — Maharashtra levies ₹200/month (₹2,400/year), Karnataka ₹200/month, Tamil Nadu ₹150/month. Some states have no professional tax.

Special Allowance is the residual amount after accounting for basic, HRA, and other defined components. It is fully taxable. Employers often adjust it to arrive at the agreed CTC.

If you live in rented accommodation, the HRA component of your salary may be partially or fully exempt from tax. The exempt amount is the minimum of: actual HRA received, rent paid minus 10% of basic, or 50% (metro) / 40% (non-metro) of basic salary.
