How Retirement Planning Works

Your monthly expenses today will be higher at retirement due to inflation. We first find the inflation-adjusted expense at retirement, then calculate the corpus needed to sustain those withdrawals (using SWP — Systematic Withdrawal Plan) over your retirement years, earning a post-retirement return.

The difference between the required corpus and your current savings (grown to retirement age) is the gap you need to fill via monthly SIP.

Retirement Calculator Formula & Calculation

Corpus needed = Monthly expense × 12 × 25 (4% withdrawal rule)

Inflation-adjusted future expense = Current monthly expense × (1 + inflation rate)^years to retirement.

Example: Current expenses ₹50,000/month, retirement in 25 years, 6% inflation, 12% growth during accumulation, 8% post-retirement.
Future monthly need = ₹50,000 × (1.06)²⁵ = ₹2,14,594/month.
Corpus needed for 25 years of retirement ≈ ₹5.2 crore.
Monthly SIP needed for 25 years at 12% = ₹37,000/month.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Inflation — 6% inflation halves purchasing power in 12 years. Retiring at 60 with a ₹50K/month lifestyle will require ₹2.14L/month at 85 — plan your corpus accordingly.
  2. Life expectancy — Plan to age 85–90. Running out of money at 75 is the single biggest retirement risk for Indians. NPS and annuities help ensure income for life.
  3. Post-retirement income — NPS mandatory annuity, rental income, dividends, and part-time consulting can significantly reduce the lump-sum corpus needed. Even ₹30,000/month in passive income saves ~₹90L in required corpus.
  4. Healthcare costs — Budget 2–3× your current monthly medical expense post-retirement. Medical inflation in India runs at 10–14% annually. A senior citizen health policy of ₹25–50L sum insured is essential before retirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

A common rule is to have 25–30 times your annual expenses saved at retirement (the 4% withdrawal rule). For example, if you spend ₹60,000/month (₹7.2L/year), you need ₹1.8–2.16 crore corpus.

SWP (Systematic Withdrawal Plan) lets you withdraw a fixed amount monthly from your mutual fund corpus after retirement. This replaces a monthly salary and the remaining corpus continues to grow.

Inflation erodes purchasing power. If today's monthly expense is ₹50,000 and inflation is 6%, in 25 years you will need ₹2.15 lakh per month. Always plan for inflation-adjusted expenses.

A diversified mix works best: NPS (tax benefits, low cost), PPF (safe, tax-free), and equity mutual funds (long-term growth). Gradually shift to debt funds 5–10 years before retirement to reduce risk.

NPS (National Pension System) is a government-backed pension scheme. Contributions qualify for extra ₹50,000 tax deduction under Section 80CCD(1B). At maturity, 60% is tax-free withdrawal and 40% must be used to buy an annuity.

Start as early as possible — ideally in your 20s. Thanks to compounding, ₹5,000/month invested at 25 at 12% p.a. grows to ₹3.24 crore by 60. Starting at 35 with the same amount gives only ₹1.07 crore.
