  2. Enter the annual interest rate offered by your bank (typically 6–7% for RDs)
  3. Select the tenure in months (minimum 6 months, maximum 120 months)
  4. View the total maturity amount, total amount deposited, and total interest earned
  5. Adjust inputs to compare different RD schemes and find the best option

RD Calculator Formula & Calculation

Maturity = R × n + Interest [Post Office: I = P × n(n+1) × r ÷ (2 × 12 × 100)]

R = Monthly deposit | n = Total months | r = Annual rate

Example: ₹5,000/month RD at 6.7% for 2 years (Post Office RD, FY 2026-27): Total deposited = ₹1,20,000. Interest = 5,000 × 24 × 25 × 6.7 ÷ (2 × 12 × 100) = ₹8,375. Maturity = ₹1,28,375.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Monthly deposit amount — Choose a fixed amount you can commit to for the full tenure without breaking. Even ₹2,000/month for 5 years at 6.7% builds ₹1,43,000 in maturity.
  2. Tenure and interest rate — Post Office RD (6.7%), SBI (6.5%), small finance banks offer up to 8%+. Longer tenure builds more via compounding; compare across institutions before opening.
  3. Compounding frequency — Banks compound RD interest quarterly. The effective yield is slightly higher than the stated rate due to intra-year compounding.
  4. Missed instalment penalty — Most banks charge ₹1–2 per ₹100 per month for delayed payments. Three consecutive missed instalments can result in account closure.

Frequently Asked Questions

An RD is a savings scheme offered by banks where you deposit a fixed amount every month for a predetermined tenure and earn interest. At maturity you receive the total principal plus interest.

RD interest is calculated quarterly using compound interest: A = P × (1 + r/n)^(nt). Where P is monthly deposit, r is annual rate, n = 4 (quarterly), and t is tenure in years for each instalment.

FD requires a lump-sum deposit while RD allows monthly deposits. FD is better if you have a large amount ready. RD is ideal if you want to save a fixed amount each month from salary.

Yes. RD interest is fully taxable as per your income tax slab. Banks deduct TDS at 10% if total interest exceeds ₹40,000 in a financial year (₹50,000 for senior citizens).

Most banks allow RD with a minimum of ₹500 or ₹1,000 per month. Post Office RDs start from ₹100 per month. There is no maximum limit.
