What is JSON to CSV?

Free JSON to CSV converter. Paste JSON array and instantly convert to CSV for Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet. Also supports CSV to JSON. Developer utilities built for web developers, software engineers, and programmers. TekPulse's JSON to CSV is completely free — no signup, no ads in results, and no data stored on our servers.

How to Use JSON to CSV Online

  1. Paste your JSON data (must be an array of objects with consistent keys) into the input area
  2. Click "Convert" — the tool extracts the keys as CSV headers and each object as a row
  3. Preview the CSV table in the output panel
  4. Download the .csv file for use in Excel, Google Sheets, or any data analysis tool
  5. Nested objects are flattened with dot notation (e.g. address.city becomes a column)

JSON to CSV Formula & Calculation

Columns = union of all object keys across the array | CSV field quoting: wrap in " and double any internal " if the value contains a comma, quote, or newline

Converting a JSON array of objects to CSV first scans every object to build the full set of column headers — since different objects in the array may have different keys, the header row is the union (not just the first object's keys), and any object missing a key gets an empty cell for that column. Each cell is then escaped per CSV convention: if a value contains the delimiter, a double-quote, or a newline, the whole value is wrapped in double quotes and any internal double-quote is doubled (" → "").

Example: [{"name":"A","city":"NYC"},{"name":"B, Jr.","age":30}] → header "name, city, age" → rows "A,NYC," and """B, Jr."",,30" — note how the comma inside "B, Jr." forces quoting so it isn't mistaken for a column break.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Flat objects only — This converts flat key-value objects directly; nested objects or arrays inside a field get stringified as-is rather than flattened into dotted sub-columns (e.g. address.city) — pre-flatten nested JSON before converting if you need separate columns per nested field.
  2. Delimiter choice — Comma is the CSV default, but values containing commas (addresses, names with suffixes) need quoting as shown above; switching to a semicolon or tab delimiter is common in regions/tools where comma is the decimal separator.
  3. Missing keys become empty cells — If objects in the array have inconsistent shapes, rows are padded with empty strings for missing keys rather than causing an error — check your row/column counts match what you expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Paste your JSON array into the tool and click Convert. The tool extracts the keys from the first object as CSV headers and maps each object's values as rows. JSON must be a flat array of objects for best results.

JSON supports nested structures, multiple data types, and is ideal for APIs. CSV is a flat tabular format (rows and columns) best suited for spreadsheet data, database imports, and Excel. CSV is simpler but cannot represent nested data.

Nested objects in JSON are either flattened (nested.key becomes a column) or serialized as a JSON string in the CSV cell. True nesting cannot be represented in a flat CSV format.

Yes. CSV files open directly in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and LibreOffice Calc. When opening, Excel may ask about delimiters — choose comma. For files with Indian characters (UTF-8), choose UTF-8 encoding on import.
