What is Fuel Cost Calculator?

Calculate fuel cost for any trip or monthly usage. Enter distance, mileage and fuel price to get instant results. India-specific financial calculators built for the Indian tax system, RBI guidelines, and Indian banking rates. TekPulse's Fuel Cost Calculator is completely free — no signup, no ads in results, and no data stored on our servers.

How to Use Fuel Cost Calculator Online

  1. Enter the total distance of your trip or monthly driving distance in kilometres
  2. Enter your vehicle's fuel efficiency (mileage) in km/litre
  3. Enter the current fuel price per litre for petrol or diesel in your city
  4. View the total fuel required and total cost for the trip or month
  5. Use the comparison feature to compare fuel costs between two vehicles or fuel types

Fuel Cost Calculator Formula & Calculation

Fuel Needed (litres) = Distance (km) ÷ Mileage (km/l) | Total Cost = Litres × Fuel Price (₹/litre)

For monthly cost mode, Distance = Daily Distance × Working Days per Month. Per-person cost (trip mode) divides the total by the number of passengers sharing the ride.

Example (trip): 180 km trip, car mileage 15 km/l, petrol at ₹105/litre, 3 passengers → Litres needed = 180 ÷ 15 = 12 litres → Total cost = 12 × 105 = ₹1,260 → Per person = ₹420.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Mileage accuracy — Real-world mileage is usually 10–20% lower than the manufacturer-claimed figure due to AC use, traffic, and load; use your vehicle's actual observed mileage for a realistic estimate rather than the brochure number.
  2. Fuel price volatility — Petrol/diesel prices vary by state (due to differing VAT) and change periodically; update the price field with your local pump rate for an accurate figure.
  3. Electric vehicles — The "equivalent mileage" preset for EVs is a rough per-km cost comparison against petrol and does not reflect actual electricity units consumed — use a dedicated EV running-cost calculation for precise figures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ Mileage) × Fuel Price. Example: 300 km trip, car gives 15 km/litre, petrol at ₹100/litre → Cost = (300/15) × 100 = ₹2,000.

Hatchbacks: 18–22 km/litre. Sedans: 14–18 km/litre. SUVs: 12–16 km/litre. Actual mileage depends on driving conditions, speed, AC usage, and load. City mileage is typically 20–25% lower than highway mileage.

Keep tyres properly inflated, drive at 60–80 km/h on highways, avoid sudden acceleration/braking, service the car regularly, reduce AC usage at low speeds, and remove unnecessary weight from the car.

Highway mileage is higher because driving is smoother at constant speeds. City mileage is lower due to frequent braking, idling, and stop-and-go traffic. ARAI figures are tested under ideal conditions — real-world is typically 15–20% lower.

Monthly Fuel Cost = (Monthly Distance ÷ Mileage) × Current Fuel Price. Track your odometer at the start and end of the month to get accurate monthly distance.

Yes, significantly. CNG costs roughly ₹75–90/kg and gives equivalent mileage of 25–30 km/kg, making the per-km cost about ₹2.5–3.5 vs ₹6–8 for petrol. However, CNG has lower power output and requires tank space.
