How to Use FD Calculator Online

  1. Enter the principal deposit amount (the amount you want to invest in the FD)
  2. Enter the annual interest rate offered by your bank for the chosen tenure
  3. Select the deposit tenure in years and months and the compounding frequency (quarterly for most Indian banks)
  4. View the maturity amount, interest earned, and effective yield instantly
  5. Compare results by changing the tenure or rate to find the best FD option

FD Calculator Formula & Calculation

Maturity = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t)

P = Principal | r = Annual interest rate (decimal) | n = Compounding frequency per year (4 for quarterly) | t = Years

Example: ₹5,00,000 FD at 7.5% p.a. for 5 years, compounded quarterly: A = 5,00,000 × (1 + 0.075/4)^(4×5) = 5,00,000 × (1.01875)²⁰ = ₹7,24,300. Interest earned = ₹2,24,300.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Interest rate — Compare across SBI (6.5–7%), HDFC/ICICI (6.6–7.1%), small finance banks like AU/Ujjivan (7.5–8.5%). Senior citizens get 0.25–0.5% extra at most banks.
  2. Compounding frequency — Quarterly compounding gives more than annual at the same advertised rate. For ₹5L at 7%: annual compounding = ₹7,01,300; quarterly = ₹7,07,800 at 5 years.
  3. Tax on FD interest — FD interest is taxable as "Income from Other Sources" at your applicable slab rate. TDS is deducted at 10% if annual interest exceeds ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for senior citizens). File Form 15G/15H if total income is below taxable limit to avoid TDS.
  4. Premature withdrawal penalty — Most banks impose 0.5–1% reduction on applicable rate for early withdrawal. Choose tenure you won't break; or use sweep-in FDs for liquidity with near-FD rates.
