Discount Calculator Formula & Calculation

Final Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100) | Original Price (reverse) = Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)

For stacked/successive discounts on two products, each discount is applied independently to its own original price, then the two final prices are compared.

Example: A ₹2,500 shirt at 30% off → Savings = 2,500 × 0.30 = ₹750 → Final price = ₹1,750. Reverse case: a ₹1,750 sale price was reached with a 30% discount → Original price = 1,750 ÷ 0.70 = ₹2,500.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Percentage off vs flat amount — A 30% discount is only equivalent to a flat ₹X off at one specific original price; always recompute per item rather than assuming the rupee saving carries over.
  2. Successive discounts — Two discounts applied one after another (e.g., 20% then 10%) do not add up to 30% — the second discount applies to the already-reduced price, giving an effective 28% off.
  3. Reverse calculation use case — Useful for verifying an advertised "original price" on sale tags — multiply the sale price by 100 ÷ (100 − discount%) to check if the claimed original price is genuine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Discount % = ((Original Price – Sale Price) / Original Price) × 100. Example: ₹800 item sold at ₹600 → Discount = (200/800) × 100 = 25%.

Sale Price = Original Price × (1 – Discount%/100). Example: ₹1,000 with 20% off → ₹1,000 × 0.80 = ₹800.

Successive discounts are applied one after another. A 20% discount followed by 10% discount is NOT the same as 30% off. The effective discount = 100 – (80 × 90 / 100) = 28%.

A discount reduces the price at the time of purchase. Cashback is a refund credited after purchase (to your wallet, bank, or card). Both save money but cashback has a delay.

GST is applied on the discounted price (net of discount), not on the original MRP. So if an item is sold at ₹800 after ₹200 discount, GST is charged on ₹800.
