What is Bill Splitter?

Free bill splitter for roommates, trips, and group dinners. Add shared expenses and instantly see who owes whom — the minimum number of payments to settle up. India-specific financial calculators built for the Indian tax system, RBI guidelines, and Indian banking rates. TekPulse's Bill Splitter is completely free — no signup, no ads in results, and no data stored on our servers.

How to Use Bill Splitter Online

  1. Add each person in the group by name
  2. For each shared expense, enter the description, amount, who paid, and who it should be split among
  3. Review each person's balance — positive means they're owed money, negative means they owe
  4. Check the "Settle Up" section for the minimum number of payments to clear all balances
  5. Have the people shown pay each other the listed amounts to settle up

Bill Splitter Formula & Calculation

Balance(person) = Total they paid − Total of their share across all expenses | Settlement via greedy debt simplification

After computing each person's net balance (positive = owed money, negative = owes money), the tool repeatedly matches the largest creditor with the largest debtor, settles the smaller of the two amounts between them, and repeats — minimizing the number of payments needed to settle the whole group, instead of everyone paying everyone else individually.

Example: A paid ₹3,000 for a trip shared equally by A, B, C (₹1,000 each share). B paid ₹0, C paid ₹0. Balances: A = +₹2,000, B = −₹1,000, C = −₹1,000. Settlement: B pays A ₹1,000, C pays A ₹1,000 — just 2 payments instead of a tangle of IOUs.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Greedy minimization — For n people, this greedy largest-vs-largest matching typically produces at most n−1 payments, far fewer than the n×(n−1) possible pairwise debts if everyone settled individually.
  2. Unequal splits — Expenses can be split only among the people who were actually part of that expense (not necessarily everyone in the group), so balances correctly reflect who owes what for shared vs individual costs.
  3. Rounding threshold — Balances under ₹0.5 are treated as settled to avoid showing meaningless fractional-rupee payments caused by floating-point division.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tool calculates each person's net balance (what they paid minus their fair share), then works out the minimum number of payments needed to settle everyone up — instead of everyone paying everyone else back individually.

Yes — uncheck anyone who shouldn't be included in a particular expense before adding it. For example, if only 3 of 5 people ordered dessert, uncheck the other 2 for that expense.

They'll show a positive balance (they're owed money) even if unchecked from "Split Among" — the payer is always credited the full amount, regardless of who shares the cost.

It covers the same core use case — shared group expenses with debt simplification — but runs entirely in your browser with no account, no cloud sync across devices, and no history beyond what's saved locally.

Yes — everything is stored only in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is uploaded or shared with other people automatically; you'd need to communicate the settlement results to your group yourself.
