QR Code Generator Formula & Calculation

QR capacity & recoverability depend on Version (grid size) and Error Correction Level (L/M/Q/H = 7%/15%/25%/30% recoverable)

A QR code encodes data into a grid of black/white modules using Reed-Solomon error correction, which adds redundant data so the code can still be read even if part of it is damaged, dirty, or covered by a logo. This tool generates codes at Error Correction Level M (Medium — roughly 15% of the code can be destroyed/obscured and it will still scan correctly), a sensible default balancing data capacity against damage resistance. The library automatically picks the smallest QR 'version' (grid size, from 21×21 up to 177×177 modules) that fits your content at that correction level — more data means a bigger, denser grid.

The content itself is formatted per QR convention for each type: a WiFi QR encodes 'WIFI:T:<encryption>;S:<ssid>;P:<password>;;', a WhatsApp link becomes a wa.me URL with the phone number and pre-filled message URL-encoded, and an SMS/Email QR uses the sms: / mailto: URI schemes that phones recognize and route to the right app automatically on scan.

Key Factors That Affect Your Result

  1. Error correction level — Higher levels (Q, H) make the code more resistant to smudges, print defects, or a logo placed in the center, at the cost of a denser, harder-to-scan-at-a-distance pattern. Level M (used here) is the common middle ground for most printed and digital use cases.
  2. Content length vs. code density — Longer URLs or text force a bigger QR grid (higher "version"), which needs a sharper camera and more physical print size to scan reliably — shortening a URL before encoding it keeps the code simpler and more scannable.
  3. Content type formatting — Using the correct URI scheme (wa.me, mailto:, sms:, WIFI:) is what makes a phone's camera app recognize the QR as "open WhatsApp" or "connect to WiFi" instead of just showing raw text — plain text QR codes don't trigger these app actions.
  4. Foreground/background contrast — Scanners rely on high contrast between the dark and light modules; low-contrast color choices (e.g., light gray on white) can make an otherwise valid QR code unreadable by cameras.
